James Toogood is a writer who paints under the name of Danny Kay.

He studied Art and English literature at A-level, but his love for film steered him towards university. He achieved a BA Honours in Film Studies at Southampton Solent University in 2006. He was brought up Bideford, Devon by parents who encouraged creativity, supplying endless amounts of paint, pencils and paper.

Between 2001 and 2010 he travelled New Zealand, Australia and Thailand.

Publications:

  • 2011 he completed his first novel called Smoke, set in Thailand and Exmoor
  • 2015 he completed his second called Zero – an existential piece about the end of human kind

His work:

He believes that his quirky acrylics are a just remedy for the darkness that erupts in his writing and likes it to be a clear divide between the two.

James works with acrylics, painting on stretched canvas or canvas board. The quick drying time and vibrant colours compliment his style. His work is inspired by the fishing village of Appledore. He enjoys the caricatured style over realism as it enhances the joy and fun of the quayside subject matter.
