Hugh West

Hugh studied at Hereford School of Art and Design, in England. He transferred to Redruth School of Art to take a further ceramic course. After work experience with several established potters, Hugh opened his own studio pottery in Newquay, in 1971.

An opportunity arose in 1975 to begin a large studio pottery in Devon on the Flete Estate. After this, in 1982, for 3 years, he took his family to La Borne in France where an ancient pottery village still survives, repeating the traditional forms and ways of wood firing to that region of France, using an Anagama kiln.

In 2000, Hugh and family returned in La Borne to live and work for good. They returned to Cornwall in January 2014 and Hugh has renewed his membership of the Cornwall Crafts Association.

His Work:

Hugh and Karen Carlyon have been developing a range of tableware as well as producing their own individual studio pieces. They work exclusively in porcelain using exciting high temperature glaze colours, the result of years of research and experimentation.

He has been teaching Karen Carlyon for more than three years and now they work together on an equal footing. Karen’s interest in clay work began with sculpture but her real interest is in throwing porcelain. She has taken over a great deal of the heavier production work, as 50 years as a potter, have taken their toll on my shoulders and back.

All products are dishwasher, oven and microwave proof.

Exhibitions: These include numerous one-man shows in Britain; collective shows in Europe, Japan, the USA, Saudi Arabia and South Korea.
